"En la noche de Reyes del año 1956, un escritor de 28 años llamado Rafael Sánchez Ferlosio era galardonado con el premio Nadal por una obra que creó escuela y que abría un nuevo cauce en la literatura española tras la guerra: la veta del objetivismo.
Se cumplen cincuenta años desde que, en el Hotel Oriente de Barcelona, se diera a conocer la existencia de este gran río literario del que han bebido todos los narradores que en España han sido. La Noche de Reyes de 1956 se fallaba (o mejor dicho, se acertaba con) la XII edición del premio Nadal, al que concurrían 241 obras. Entre los finalistas figuraban títulos como «La rama obscura», del poeta antequerano José Antonio Muñoz Rojas; «Bearn o la sala de las muñecas», de Lorenzo Villalonga; «Enterrar a los muertos», de Juan Guerrero Zamora; o «Bienaventurados», de Ángel María de Lera. Fueron necesarias siete votaciones para que «El Jarama» ganara el Nadal. En todas y cada una de ellas la obra de Ferlosio obtuvo siete votos. Y siete eran los miembros del Jurado: Ignacio Agustí, director de Destino; Juan Ramón Masoliver, Néstor Luján, Juan Teixidor, Sebastián Juan Arbó, José Vergés y Rafael Vázquez Zamora, que actuó de secretario. «El Jarama» fue encumbrado, pues, por unanimidad."
