La obra de Ibsen es fundamental. Su estudio psicológico de los personajes, en especial los caracteres femeninos, y su sentido crítico con la burguesía y el capitalismo, en el encuentro del individuo con la sociedad, son algunas de las características principales de su escritura.
Sus títulos más destacados son los dramas en verso "Brandt" (1864) y "Peer Gynt" (1865) y sus obras en prosa "Casa de muñecas" (1879), "Los Espectros" (1881), "El pato salvaje" (1884), "La dama del mar" (1888), "Hedda Gabler" (1891) o "Al despertar de nuestra muerte" (1899).
